More seriously, though, I don’t know how or where to start summarising everything that 2013 has been and meant to me. It seems near impossible to convey how very radiant, despite all its challenges and curve-balls, the world has been this year. Last December, I was beginning to feel unmoored and unsure of my decision to move to Canada; my mind tumbled with yearnings but didn’t know how to fulfill them, and I hoped I was on the right path yet could also imagine running home before the seasons turned.
Now, looking back, I see a year filled with everything (to varying degrees) I hoped to find and achieve in 2013. Some of my wishes came true exactly as I’d hoped, some manifested in unexpected ways, and others changed shape along the way as I myself realigned. In fact, I ticked the box on one of my promises to myself just a few weeks back (scraping in under the wire much?), and yet immediately realised I’d reached that pot of gold in a different shimmering form months earlier, without knowing it.
Of course, not everything has been, or will ever be, smooth sailing. Some of the parts of life that make waking up each morning so wonderful are the same things that make looking further into the future terrifying. And there will always be days when everything around and within me feels jagged, broken, restless, unsure, awful, and hopeless, for no clear reason at all.
It is on such days that dessert is utterly necessary. Nourishing soups and hearty one-pot meals, too. Perhaps a G&T or a lavender cocktail (seeing as we’re among friends here). This, my dear darlings, is my segue from airy-fairy ponderings to my annual round-up of the blog’s best and favourite recipes of 2013, determined by your comments and page hits, and my own personal fancies.
I hope your 2014 is even more jazzy than you could possibly imagine.
