Those of you with eagle eyes may have noticed that there were more chocolate bars in the package Jordan sent me than were covered in my earlier UK chocolate review. Bravo, eagles! You were right!
Here is my love letter to the final two chocolates from the wonderful Jordan.
Valrhona Dulcey Blond Chocolate
I am finding it hard to write this particular review. Because, you see — oh, mercy — this Valrhona Dulcey Blond Chocolate is incredible. It is like no other white chocolate, or even any chocolate, I’ve had. This type of reaction is probably why Valrhona gets away with calling it “blond chocolate” instead of “white chocolate”, come to think of it.
To convey the flavour in a nutshell, I’d describe the Dulcey as caramelised white chocolate.
But it is so much more than that.
The tiniest bite, and I was overwhelmed by the taste of shortbread and caramel, buttery caramel rich melting salt-kissed shortbread, so completely and utterly that I almost couldn’t believe I was eating chocolate and not an upmarket version of an Arnott’s Scotch Finger.
As much as my heart will always yearn for dark chocolate above all else, I have no qualms in stating that this is now one of my favourite chocolates of all time.
Michel Cluizel 1er Cru de Plantation Mangaro
Michel Cluizel 1er Cru de Plantation Mangaro is a single origin 65% dark chocolate that I’ve tried and loved before. However, I’ve never yet lived in a city where it’s easily available, and thus finding a bar in my UK chocolate parcel of wonderment was a thrill indeed.
Michel Cluizel’s Mangaro dark chocolate had a fruity aroma with notes of pineapple, lemon meringue pie, and a little almond. The texture was blissfully smooth, melting away in the mouth like the silkiest fudge.
As is the case with every Cluizel chocolate I’ve tried, the flavour was headily rich, reaching towards the ideal of what we dream of in dark chocolate. There’s a twist of lemon curd or lemon liquer on the tongue towards the end, but otherwise this chocolate tastes like perfect hot fudge sauce over a molten chocolate brownie all topped with a cloud of more chocolate.
But in a balanced, lovely way.
Sometimes life is grand.
