Once upon a time, I emailed Sweets From The Earth to enquire about stockists of their vegan espresso cheesecake, because I’d been to three different stores in my area and hadn’t been able to track the treat down. All I wanted was to find out if there was somewhere I could definitely buy it from, because the harder the vegan cheesecake became to find, the more I wanted its rich deliciousness.
In reply, the incredible folk of the Toronto-based company invited me to come to their main office and pick up a cheesecake, on them. I was blown away.
When I arrived, I was handed a box containing not only Sweets From The Earth’s vegan espresso cheesecake, but also their vegan and nut free chocolate cheesecake, an assortment of muffins, a packet of molasses cookie dough, and a box of their epic cashew cookies.
I completely lost the power of speech at the incredible generosity, and I remember feeling, that day, that winter in Canada can most definitely be bearable so long as one has the sweetness of both kind folks and dessert on one’s side.
Today, I bring you reviews of Sweets From The Earth’s cheesecakes. Next time, we’ll cover the muffins and cookies. (Spoiler: everything was amazing.)
The chocolate cookie crust helped sell this for me, as it crumbled against my spoon with a dark, dark, barely-sweet intensity that perfectly balanced the moussey-light texture and sweetness of the vegan cream cheese and tofu-based cheesecake layer. Plus, the chocolate squiggles on top were squiggly. Squigglyness equals goodness.
I really like coffee.
Sweets From The Earth’s espresso cheesecake was wonderful. I sadly did not get to eat all nearly-two-pounds of this one by myself, as I felt duty-bound to share with my beyond-brilliant housemate Sarah, who is gluten-free and dairy-free.
Sweets From The Earth’s cheesecakes aren’t of the super-dense New York baked cheesecake variety, instead poised between fluffy mousse and satisfyingly creamy. At times, it was hard to wait for my generously-portioned slabs to thaw properly before eating, but doing so definitely helped the awesomeness. So note to everyone else: patience, Iago.
These cheesecakes are worth waiting for.
And I’m definitely going to buy more for myself soon. (Salted caramel flavour next, Sweets From The Earth? Or peanut butter? Or salted caramel peanut butter..?)
