More often than not, the chocolates I review on this blog are worthy of being described as any or all of the following: artisanal, exquisite, fancypants, innovative, expensive, and extravagantly wonderful.
On occasion, though, I find myself gleefully testing out chocolate creations that epitomise the complete opposite of the aforementioned words. I like to pretend I’m doing so for the sake of the blog and, more importantly, for you reading. But, well, let’s be honest: sometimes I buy ridiculous chocolate purely because I want to know what ridiculousness tastes like.
And thus I present to you storebrand chocolate covered potato chips, aka the budget Canadian version of this previously-reviewed Chuao Potato Chip Bar.
President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips
In the comments of my Chuao post, I promised my friend Lizzi that I’d review these chocolate covered potato chips as soon as I tracked them down. Cut to last Sunday when, after seeing Les Misérables* with Lisa**, I ducked into a grocery store to buy vegetables and instead found myself leaping across the store to snatch up a bag of “[c]runchy rippled potato chips covered in creamy milk chocolate”.
Upon opening the package, I was surprised to find that each chocolate covered chip was quite hefty (though I’m not sure what I was expecting; fairy chips perhaps?). The chocolate was, happily, real chocolate rather than a compound sugar-oil atrocity, and the aroma emanating from the bag had notes of vanilla, waffle cones, sugary cereal, and ice cream.
My first bite stunned me with alternating thoughts of “so crispy! so salty! so crispy! so salty! so crispy!” and so on and so forth. For a second, I wasn’t sure if the creamy and very-sweet milk chocolate really worked with the you-can-taste-the-fried-potato saltiness of the chip component. I found myself thinking that the neutral malty crunch of pretzels is a better salty fit with chocolate than are these chips.
However, the final sentence in my tasting notes was “this sweet-salty trashiness makes my brain laugh”, so clearly President’s Choice Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips have something going for them.
P.S. You know how I wrote that this treat was Canadian? I take it back. Although sold under the President’s Choice label, these chocolate covered potato chips were, in fact, made in the U.S.A. I should have known.
* So. Many. Thoughts. I had to resist writing forty thousand paragraphs about what I liked and disliked about Les Mis, particularly as the USF production is still so fresh in my mind.
