As I write this, it’s raining raining lightning hailing raining cool-breeze-beautiful-blue-flashes crackling crashing storming outside and I want to run out my door and spin around in the wind and lift my head back and woop and twirl holding hands with my brother while performing a made-up Madcap Helter Pelter Skelter Rain Dance together just like we did when we were kids at the coast and he afterwards said for the very first time that he was glad he had a sister and I was so happy so happy so happy I could burst.
But it’s late, and I’m scared that if I run outside in this wildness I might never stop running.
And so I’ll write about the smoothie I made earlier instead, while the lightning intermittently turns my room from dark-grey to diamond-blue-white and the floor rumbles beneath my feet as I imagine lions in the skies roaring at each other with a passion that defies reality.
I spy with my little eye… a Telstra Broadband stick, cinnamon, free mints from the plane, a business card from someone I met at a work meeting, the little box for my glass dharma straw, a fantasy novel, and my keys.
This Raspberry Pineapple smoothie is raw, vegan, made of only four (or five, or six) ingredients, perfectly balanced between sweetness and tanginess, thick and creamy, and exactly what you need on a 32 degree just before the heat breaks with one of the strongest, scariest, beautiful-est, longest, and crackling-est storms you’ve ever experienced.
This smoothie is also the perfect elixir to power you through an exuberant, breathless, gasping-sobbing, who-cares-if-the-world-sees Rain Dance… but I won’t tell if you won’t.

I’m submitting this to Ricki’s Wellness Weekend, huzzah!
Question Time: If you were in Canberra, what were you doing during the storm? Did it keep you up until after 2:30am, like it did me? If you aren’t in Canberra (and why not?), are you a fan of thunderstorms?

I LOVE thunderstorms! They are so exciting! I see you snuck a few sprinkles in your smoothie.
*laughs* I only noticed those myself while uploading the photos! I’m rather confused as to how they got in there… I must just emanate sprinkles, or something.
Love, love, love thunderstorms. I grew up on the north-coast of NSW and have a particular fondness still for the tropicalish type that come rolling in at the close of a warm, sticky day. We’ve been getting some pretty good ones here in Melbourne lately too but without the tropical heat to go with it it’s just not quiet the same (there’s certainly no desire to go out and run around in it coz you might just ‘catch yer death’ out there in the cold).
I think you’re right; thunderstorms to break a warm, sticky day have something indefinably magical to them that thunderstorms on already-freezing day simply don’t. But you’re also right that running around outside in them isn’t the cleverest thing in the world. Sadly.
I forget that it is warm there for you! Lucky girl.
Your storm sounds wonderful. I like to sit on my deck and watch them roll in during the summer.
If only I had a deck! I definitely stood with my nose pressed against the flyscreen of my window, though
And yes, I’m loving the hot weather!
This looks delicious, too pretty to eat! I love the color from the raspberries, and frozen pineapple is one of my absolute favorites!
Thank you! Though I can promise you that it tasted even better than it looked
Great detailed observation of the photo but you missed a computer and bowl of smoothies. I suppose they are quite well camouflaged:) Hate thunderstorms!
Darnit, I knew I was forgetting something! Stupid glitchy brain!
I am suddenly struggling to think of a good excuse for not being in Canberra. It’s lucky this isn’t an interview situation
I love storms, but your recent one does sound rather intense. I can say, though, that it would not have kept me up to 2.30am. Nothing has ever kept me up until 2.30am (except travel, and I don’t think that counts) and I suspect nothing ever will. Waking up at 2.30am after being asleep – sure. Not going to sleep until the next day? Pretty much never!
My goodness, I completely forgot to comment on the smoothie. That Canberra question clearly threw me more than I thought
I would love this smoothie irrespective of weather and irrespective of time, and think the vanilla and coconut options are essential indeed!
Oooh, I feel like this is my golden moment to come up with a reason for you to move here that is so irrefutable that you simply can’t resist buying a ticket! Come on, Hannah, think! Think! Entice your darling squinkledonk!
Oh my heavens, I can’t even comprehend your answer! I haven’t been asleep before it’s technically the next day in… honest-to-goodness years, except for the rare occasions when I’ve been horribly sick, and even then the earliest I usually get to sleep is 11:30pm.. Oh Kari, please give me some of your magical sleep elixir! *holds out hands with pleading eyes*
Truly? Wow. I think I can count the number of times I’ve been awake to 12am, and it is not many at all – these days, pretty much only for weddings! I blame my Mum, who had me on a 7pm bedtime until I was ridiculously old. I get past 7pm these days, but after about 9.30pm I’m pretty useless and liable to slip into sleepy mode. Even if I’m anxious or restless I’ll sleep / wake up / sleep / wake up, rather than not get to sleep. However, I do get up about 5.40am weekdays, so that might have something to do with my early tiredness!
I wish I had some magical advice for you, but I’m afraid that elixir may still be elusive. You could give sprinkles a try?
I’m so envious right now I might cry. Even when I don’t have anything causing me to stress, it takes me at least an hour to get to sleep. I used to always try to be in bed at 10:30pm, but I’ve given up these days. Perhaps if I made myself get up at 5:40am for a month or so, I might be able to sleep earlier… but that’s unlikely to happen
Oh darling, now I want to cry on your behalf! I hope your work at least quietens down enough to facilitate easier falling asleep…or opportunities to sleep in (if you can sleep in? I fail at that one). I’ll send you sleep vibes next time I’m tired, which should be in, oh, about 3 hours
*laughs* Those sleep vibes would be right on schedule for me then, as we’re therefore looking at quarter to one
Ack I hate thunder, was there thunder? Hehe spay lady were you drinking your smoothie with a straw out of a bowl?
Oh my gosh, so much thunder! At around 5:30pm, when it started, there was a crack so loud it set off a car alarm in my parking lot, which went for the next hour and a half *shudder*. It actually did manage to scare me a couple of times!
And yes, that’s how I always drink my smoothies
Partly because my smoothies are always too big to fit in any of my glasses, and also because I like it better that way
I believe the only reason I’m not in Canberra at the moment is that Askinosie bars, where available, are… what did you say? 18 gosh darn dollars? Crazy town. Do something about this, and I will make an appearance.
Lovely smoothie. I spy sprinkles! If only I had a blender that didn’t just whir-thump whenever I put anything in it. Cause things don’t happen inside my blender. It is old, and ready to lie down. Forever. Wah wah wahhhhhh.
Actually, Askinosie isn’t available at all anymore. Does that make us more or less of a crazy town? What if I get my brother to bring me back Askinosie bars from America and I keep them in my pantry for you? Would you come then?
Teehee, you’re the second person to spy the sprinkles! I honestly don’t know how they got in there. I didn’t even notice until I loaded the photos!
Oooh! That’s the reason for you to come here! You can share my Vita-Mix
It’s even more special because I had to pay over double what y’all pay in America for it
That was a wowser of a storm wasn’t it? I actually got to sleep in the lull between about 10 and 1am but I was most definitely awake at 2am when we got the full force. My little lettuces in the garden were rather shredded by the hail. But I must say it was super exciting and the lightening was so bright it was exactly like being on a movie set.
Your soothing smoothie looks much healthier than the dark chocolate and red wine I ate whilst watching the lightening dance.
P.S. I love a dance in the rain but I’m glad you stayed inside with all that crazy lightening.
Wasn’t the brightness crazy? It was so blue and white and stunning. But poor lettuce babies!
Um, the entire block of dark chocolate came afterwards. And half a huge bag of chips. But there was also cauliflower! Totally balanced it out.
Eeek thunderstorms scare me! I’m such a baby.
Tell me about Sunwarrior, do you like the taste? Chalky or no? I’m in the market for some protein powder and I want a recommendation from someone not collecting promotional money from them
Also, I love the glass dharma straw. LOVE LOVE LOVE!
Lastly, pineapple raspberry sounds like a dreamy combination.
*laughs and laughs* I’m perfectly happy with Sunwarrior. I’ve never found it chalky in smoothies, and I think it tastes nice enough. I did once put a huge scoop into a bowl with oatbran and soymilk then microwaved it without properly stirring first, and that was rather disgesting. But microwaving is pretty much the antithesis of raw, so that one’s on me
Anyway, I have almost no experience with other protein powders as I haven’t seen many that aren’t whey-based and muscle-men-targeted in Australia, but I did bring back some vegan samples from the States that made me want to wash my mouth out. And I’ll buy more Sunwarrior once this is finished. So I’m voting yes? But nervously, because it’s a splurge and I’d hate it you didn’t like it! End thesis.
P.S. It’s lucky you weren’t here for this thunderstorm then! I would’ve let you hide under my bed though
I used to be shit scared of storms but loved them when I was safely inside. These days I can appreciate the beauty of them.
We had some terrible rain here in Melbourne as well and I was woken up by the rumbling of thunder and was very glad that I was in my car driving to work when the flashes of lightning were right above me.
PS – I so love the tip of the frozen bananas! True story – first time I tried to freeze a banana I literally chucked it into the freezer – with the skin on. I was so confused afterwards why I couldn’t get to it.
Oh yes, there’s definitely a difference between being safely inside and imagining running out into a storm, and actually being caught outside in one
I think I’d be scared to be in a car when lightning was happening! But I guess it’s better than being up a tree. Which, you know, I do all the time…?!
P.S. I’ve read a few people tell that story lately, which is why I decided to add the tip! I’ve never had that issue because I was introduced to frozen bananas at my first job when I was 14, where we had a huge tub of sliced frozen banana for milkshakes in the freezer at all times. I used to sneak chunks to eat like ice cream in between washing endless dishes
Yummy smoothie and I love your I spy picture – it was fun to look through your stuff! – I did a raspberry smoothie on Tuesday but it was a bit intense – I think it needed pineapple
I put sylvia to bed during pelting rain yesterday afternoon and thought how nice it would be to lie in bed and have the rain pitter patter outside but I had lots to do and couldn’t afford the time to lie down (could do with a nap right now actually)
There was actually another photo showing even more of my mess, but I was too embarrassed to put it up
Yes, you have to be careful with raspberries, as they can make smoothies far too sour if not tempered with something sweeter. At least, I’m guessing that’s what you mean by “intense”?
Oh, darling, I hear you. And then sometimes it’s not even chores that keep me up, just a refusal to give up my “me time” by sleeping. In the long run, though, it would probably be better to nap for both of us…
yep that is the night owl tendency to just want to do a little more in the day – though tonight I must wait until my cake bakes until I can go to bed (but any excuse will do)
*laughs* So true, so true!
Two greens, a blue and a red… do I spy only 4 sprinkles on top of your smoothie? This seems quite inadequate.
Gosh, you people have eagle eyes! I didn’t even notice the sprinkles when I was enjoying the smoothie, and didn’t mean to put any in there! Must have been some left in the container I poured the coconut into…
That smoothie sounds so refreshing!
I was sitting on my deck enjoying the cooler temperature while my hubby and littlej were running around in the rain playing with the hailstones and eating them! Dinner was very late due to the excess of spirits and warm showers required after about one and a half hours of rainy fun.
Bowl sized smoothie serve, perfect!
Oh yes, the hail! Made quite a racket banging onto all the cars in my carpark! I would’ve run outside to eat them too, if I’d had someone to nibble with
I can’t think of a better reason to delay dinner than an excess of spirits
And teehee, my smoothies are always too big for a glass!
Lurrrrve thunder storms (or as I like to cal them, thundy-storms) we get them all the time up here in Queensland, usually after a stinker of a day, they roll on in with a crackle and a pop.
Lurrrrrrve the look of that smoothie – I needs me some of the sunwarrior stuff – do you get it through iherb?
That’s when thundy-storms are best, I reckon – when they break a hot sticky day with ebbing breezes and the smell of rain, and suddenly everything feels magical
Unfortunately iHerb wouldn’t let me buy it; it kept saying that Sunwarrior was on the restricted list for Australia. However, I know other bloggers who have been able to order it through iHerb, although they said something like on a Mac computer it didn’t work but on a PC it did, or vice versa?!
I just got my first Vita, and frankly, I’m not sure how I functioned properly before it. I need to try this smoothie now!
We are currently having the closest thing to a tornado LA will ever have, so I’m sitting here eating leftovers, reading blogs, and drooling over that smoothie. You know. Very productive stuff.
Teehee, they are pretty awesome! I naughtily stopped using mine throughout winter, but am happily getting back into the smoothie-swing-of-things now
Who cares about productive? Sounds like a perfect day or evening to me. Although tornadoes? Scary stuff! Makes me think of The Wizard of Oz
I LOVE LOVE LOVE thunderstorms. When I’m inside rugged up. I wish one was happening right now. Knowing Melbourne, it probably will come now. & then it shall be sunny. I’d like this smoothie, oh so very very much. I think I have the flu
now where’s the fun in that. Going to say f you to the work I’m supposed to do right now (form home this afternoon) and have a bath. maybe watch some BBC P&P. I’ll work extra hard tomorrow. Thanks for the therapy session.
Heidi xo
Oh darling, I’m so sorry! Feel free to drive or fly your fluey self right over here, and I’ll tuck you up in bed with cookbooks, endless Vita-Mix-ed smoothies, a mug of lemon-ginger-garlic-honey tea, my mum’s myriad Austen-related books, and the rest of the Spelt Flakes that I’m bored with and don’t want to eat. After all, it’s your fault I bought them… but I love you anyway
So proud of you for listening to your body and taking the day off. I actually left work early today too. Great minds, hey? xo
I would so do that, sounds amazing! I went to sleep at 8:30pm & just woke up at 7:30am. That was rather great. I’m out of yoghurt so I may end up having to have the rest of those spelt flakes too. Blast those wretched flakes. They suck. So not fun and delicious as the box would suggest. Although…. I feel they’ll be better eaten plain, so they stay kind of crispy. Not flaccid flakes when mixed with milk. ew. Hope you’re feeling better, lovely, and treated yourself to all that you promised me above
sounded glorious. I’m super lucky, actually. Only late afternoon clients (fridays I work for myself), so I get to work this morning on my couch. Yay friday xo
Bahaha! I love hearing you state so bluntly that the Spelt Flakes suck. They really, really do. I finished the blasted box off, but never again. (And I did eat them plain most of the time; even without the flacidity [shhh, spellcheck, it's a word] they were gross.) The only cereal I’d less rather purchase is Froot Loops. *shudder*
I hope you’re still feeling better and have a lovely restful day with only wonderful clients at the end! xo
I used to love tropical thunderstorms and always did a circle of the yard with the beloved under thumping rain. But years later my house was nearly struck by lightning (blue flash in the kitchen with all the shutters closed and another time this sneaky crackle before the blast) so now I am very boring and terrified.
Sorry all frosty over here not smoothie but bean soup weather alas!
Oh, I think your terror is mighty justified! I must admit to getting a little skittish myself after a few insanely-loud and close cracks of thunder and flashes of lightning. In retrospect, I really should have unplugged all my electrical appliances
Nothing wrong with beans! They don’t go so well with bananas and raspberries, though, I must admit.
Argh. Woke up to a bolt of lightening striking the light post outside my apartment. This zapping loud noise which lit the room so bright it burned my eyes, and then the block was blanketed in black. Phewwww… It was terrifying. I jumped up and checked my apartment for leaks. Could hear a steady flow just outside the door…. Yep… Bucket loads pouring into the corridors. I decided nothing I could do, so shut the door on that. I lay in bed jumping at every clap of thunder like a frightened kitten. I dislike the noise very much. Glad you had an enjoyable time, no way you would find me doing any such thing.
Thinking of you bestie. Love love.
Oh Anna, I’m so sorry! I wish I could’ve been there to give you a hug, or at least drag you out of bed to play a silly board game and distract ourselves with. I reckon Twister at 2am would be mucho fun
P.S. Why haven’t you come by my office lately? Boooooo! xo
Did you come to Canberra for a tropical treat?
When the weather was rough but the smoothie was sweet?
Did the flashes of lightning light up the skies?
Did you stand at the window, the stars in your eyes?
I love thunderstorms but I didn’t particularly like driving in this one — in its earlier in the night but still pretty dramatic with lightning, thunder and hail phase. Later on at home, I loved snuggling in bed and hearing it blow outside but I did think, something I don’t think I’ve done in the past, of people who have experienced storms that have scared them and brought damage (if not loss of life). I haven’t experienced that so to me they are still more exciting than terrifying.
Oh, I would definitely hate to drive in one! I hate even driving in heavy rain, not least because some drivers seem to get more reckless in dangerous conditions. It’s hard not to think of destructive weather these days, isn’t it? I can’t imagine the awfulness. So glad you were safe xoxo
Omg this smoothy is AMAZING, Hannah! Lovely to the max. Am sure they tasted smashing. Btw, is that a BOWL that you’re drinking it from and a straw as well? Hahhahaha… That’s a first but I love it!! It’s so pretty and delicate too, with the sprinkles of coconut on top. YUM!
Aw, I love your enthusiasm Winston! You’ve put a smile on my face
And yep, Smoothie In A Bowl! It’s the only way I drink/eat my smoothies. Mostly because I don’t have any glasses big enough for my mammoth smoothie creations
It is indeed the time of smoothies! Thunder does not scare me…. but it scares my dog. He runs and hide somewhere, anywhere.
Teehee, my dog is crazy. She’s never been scared of normal-dog-things like thunder, but she’s scared of things like the rainwater drains on the side of the road.
Yay for smoothies! And the coconut topping just adds that extra bit of cheeriness to it.
Thank you! It seems I don’t hate coconut quite as much as I used to
What fantasy novel, pray tell? I’m not a fan of fantasy in general, but a few months ago Matt made me read George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series and I must admit, I enjoyed them.
Is that what Game of Thrones is based on? Have been meaning to try those, but haven’t made the time. I used to be completely disinterested in fantasy (you’ll have to pry my Laura Ingalls Wilder from my cold dead hands, et cetera, et cetera) but got into it in high school via the His Dark Materials trilogy and the above book(s), the Obernewtyn Chronicles by (Australian) Isobelle Carmody. I’ve bee rereading them in a fit of nostalgia. They remind me of simpler times
OMG HIS DARK MATERIALS omgomgomg. Did you see they just re-released the books with like 10 or 15 pages of new material per book? omgomgomg.
I like these books more than any other books. Combined. And I have a frickin huge crush on Will, which alternately fascinates and disgusts me, since he is pretty much a child. Rawwwr!
Oh Emma! I think this calls for a great big squeezy hug. *GREAT BIG SQUEEZY HUG* I had no idea they’d been rereleased with more material! I really shouldn’t buy those. Really shouldn’t… Oh Emma, I have to read them again now, regardless! I must admit I got turned off a bit by the horrificness that was the movie version, which somehow made everything unique about Northern Lights seem utterly derivative of every single other fantasy ever made. *shudders at memory*
I remember crying so hard when she left him behind (you’ll know what I’m talking about)! Must reread
Oh, and the first one came out in 1987, the year I was born, and she still hasn’t written the last one. Worst procrastinator ever.
this is my type of smoothie – vegan, healthy, yum.
i love sunwarrior. i really need to start making more smoothies lately! i’ve been on a sugar cleanse for about a month now, so i’ve been eating my sunwarrior shakes without any fruit!
Ew. I’m sorry, but ew.
Teehee!
oooo i just love thunderstorms (i used to be scared of them!)
this smoothie looks great
Thanks Caitlin!
I love that you put your smoothies in a bowl, and then use a straw. Too cute!
that sounds like a cool storm. I’m not in Canberra because my favorite foods are too expensive there! But I’ll visit, bring chocolate, and you can cook for me in trade – sound good?
Teehee, I’d completely forgotten that eating smoothies out of a bowl isn’t normal, and then I posted this and so many people have reminded me!
Sounds perfect! Oooh, will you be my new housemate? I’d rather you than a stranger…
This looks sooo refreshing…make me some please? X
Of course! But are smoothies allowed for you right now?
Nope but a girl can dream right?
A dream is a wish your heart makes…
I absolutely love a good thunderstorm! There’s nothing better than making oneself comfortable inside while it’s flashing, raining, hailing, thundering outside. Actually, I miss a good thunderstorm right now! It has been a while …
You describe that perfectly
I agree!
That was one crazy storm! I was in the office till 11+ in the evening, stepped out thinking the lightning and thunder seem to have stopped. But, as soon as I reached my car, the lightning flashed across my eyes. I froze. It was too late to run back to the office. So, I was stuck in the car watching the light show for a bit. haha :p
Oh my gosh, I would’ve been terrified in that situation! So glad you got home safely. But lady, what on earth were you still doing in yor office at 11pm? You better have an endless chocolate stash there
Tropical smoothies and mad rainstorms? Love!
I’m having a chuckle picturing you doing such a raindance
I used to have a Tshirt that showed a pictorial sequence of how to do a snowdance. Darn, I miss that shirt.
I wonder if your t-shirt snowdance and my wild raindance have anything in common? One day we’ll have to find out
Thunderstorms put me in the deepest sleep. They’re exhilarating, but I love them.
Oh my gosh, if you’d been able to sleep through the blinding flashes and cracks of this one, then you’d have my undying respect! (I don’t think that sentence was grammatically correct, but I don’t have the energy right now to work out how to fix it
)
so colourful and delish!
although I am quite curious about the cinnamon?
One must always have cinnamon within reach. It makes everything better. See also: cayenne pepper.
I used to be terrified of thunderstorms. Then, when I was 12, my family moved to St. Louis, and I saw thunderstorms like I’d never seen before. The novelty turned fear into fascination. Now I love to watch thunderstorms, and even kind of hope for the power to go out so I can light candles.
Clang clang clang went the trolley!
Ding ding ding went the bell!
Zing zing zing went my heartstrings…
From the moment I saw him I fell.
I like you even more now that I now (or have been reminded) that you lived in Meet Me In St. Louis world.
Also, candles are awesome, because fire is awesome, which is why I shouldn’t really be allowed to light them.
I love pink food, especially dusted with coconut and a few sneaky rainbow sprinkles. I want to dive into this bowl o’ smoothie!
Teehee, third person to spy the sneaky sprinkles! I don’t know how they got in there. And I mean that absolutely honestly. I’m planning a mango version soon
The writing in this post is so beautiful and evocative. I love thunderstorms but we don’t get that proper sort here – and definitely not at this time of year! It sounds lovely, especially with the smoothie
Thank you Eleanor! That is such a lovely thing to say; I’m all smiles
It was both lovely and terrifying, but mostly lovely!
Are you drinking it from a bowl? That’s a smoothie soup then
Yep, it totally is! I considered calling it a dessert soup, but I thought that might confused people
i love the subtle nice pink! what more can a girl want. oh yes thunderstorms.. while growing up i used to like them.. es the first one of the season.. since they meant cooler weahter after a blistering tropical summer in central india.. and we all would go out and dance too! and get soakiiing wet.. but then it rains pretty much everyday for the month or so and that gets on my nerves.. now in seattle.. the idiotic grey and mild drizzle everyday gets on my nerves too.. i mean pour that darned water and go away u clouds.. they just sit there shimying away, blocking the sun for 40 days straight.. meh.
Oh yes, I’m completely with you, Richa! Thunderstorms to break stifling heat are wonderful, but endless rain makes me miserable. I was so lucky when I visited Seattle, as I chanced upon five straight days on sunshine. I loved it!
Haha I love the name of the protein powder you used!
I’ve been looking up protein powders for post-workout shakes etc but I don’t like the sound of most of the products out on the market for they contain a lot of artificial flavours, sweeteners and goodness knows what. So far, I’ve found one brand that do raw, organic whey proteins (180 nutrition) and am slowly going through the sample pack I ordered off them. So far, so good but I’m glad that there is another one on the market so I’ll definitely suss Sun Warrior out soon.
Yes, I hit the same problem (except with the “post-workout” part, because exercise and I don’t often exist in the same sentence), with even less options because of my lactose intolerant. I’m really happy with Sunwarrior, though it was a gamble as they didn’t do sample packs! I’d offer to mail you a little baggie to try, but I kinda think that would look really suspicious
Are you having your smoothie in a bowl? That is most excellent!
I normally do a banana, mango, raspberry, blueberry smoothie (i’m greedy with my fruit) but the addition of pineapple sounds quite refreshing… <3
Teehee, I had totally forgotten that having your smoothie from a bowl isn’t “normal” until I posted this and y’all started commenting to that effect!
I just bought delicious ripe mangoes so am very much looking forward to mango-cherry and mango-pineapple smoothies soon. Wheeee!
