I might tell you about what’s been going on this week later down the track. There are certainly entertaining stories to tell, but it’s all a bit too close right now. Those of you who know what I’m talking about… shhh.
Anyhoodle, back to Brisbane! As you know, my first day in Brisbane was a joyous interplay of delighting in Robyn’s company, meeting her family, eating at Wagamama, and drinking margaritas.
After a peaceful night in which I wasn’t the lady woken in the early hours by a baby (Robyn, I’m so sorry I couldn’t share my deep sleep with you), I got up and bounded down to the kitchen. You see, my very-not-subtle hints the previous day about how incredible Robyn’s smoothies always look on her blog had ensured I was getting just such a Robyn-Style Smoothie of Magnificence for breakfast.
Dear Robyn: thank you for making me such a delicious smoothie of frozen strawberries, bananas, raw almond butter, homemade raw vegan cashew ice cream made with young coconuts, and cacao nibs, especially considering the fact you were simultaneously preparing Manus’ bottles for the day. Your ability to pander to my whims with such graciousness whilst multi-tasking in a billion other ways amazes me.
After our smoothies, I accompanied Rob and her mother to their brilliant hairdresser, Julie, where the conversation ranged from Manus’ utter gorgeousness to celebrities to coping with teenage children to asylum seekers and back again to Manus’ utter gorgeousness.
Just see for yourself:
Because Robyn is a truly caring and amazing friend, at the end of her hair appointment she mentioned to Julie that, as I’d said in the car earlier, I’ve been having massive difficulties finding a hairdresser in Canberra who can cut curly hair well.
All of a sudden I was sitting in the hot seat, with Julie showing me nifty styling tricks and offering to open her salon at 8am the next morning, just for me, if I wanted to pop by and get my hair did.
I did. I did want my hair did.
And so, after a Friday night of stealing cuddles with Manus Of The Gorgeous Eyes, Robyn and I woke up bright and early on Saturday morning to squeeze in a hairdressing appointment for me as well as an expedition to the shops to find Rob a dress to wear at Manus’ christening before I flew home.
Of course, there had to be more smoothies. This time, though, we left the Vita-Mix at home and splurged on some Boost Juice creations. Here is the beautiful Robyn, modelling her smoothie…
… and here is me, with mah hair did, drinking my watermelon berry smoothie whilst simultaneously monitoring the movements of the near-bare-chested man behind me who I feared might try to steal my goods.
Robyn, I had so much fun during this whirlwind Brisbane escape. Thank you for everything, and I can’t wait to see you again soon.

Your hair looks fantastic! And don’t you love friends that have loads of other skills!
I’m thinking of just one such fabulous friend as I write this comment
And thanks love!
Awww I’m blushing!
Hmm wouldn’t it be hilarious if you were talking about someone else?
I mean that’s the sort of thing I’d do
That would be hilarious, but I would never lie to you (I like the size of my nose, thank you very much). YOU ARE THE MOST WONDERFUL.
There is so much I like in this post! I struggled to get past the homemade raw vegan cashew ice cream (wow!), and then I was impressed with your dress in the breakfast smoothie drinking shot, and then dazzled by Manus’ smile, and then it finished with beautiful hair. I’m overwhelmed
Aw, Kari, thank you! I’m overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of your comment
Oh good to see some brisvegas sunshine! Just the thing to go with amazing smoothies – but you do look like you are up to no good in the that photo – with hair like that I am sure you could get away with it too
Teehee, unfortunately I’ve barely ever done anything naughty in my life, so I think the hair’s leading you astray
I love the way your hair turned out! I want mine to look like that (seriously)!
I’ve had an incredibly busy but also fantastic week.
That smoothie looks amazing. Have you been to your local Costco yet? Anything interesting and healthy for sale?
Thanks Margaret! Unfortunately the straight hair didn’t last long, as when I arrived in Canberra that afternoon, it was raining. Bah, humbug!
I haven’t been to Costco yet. Would you believe I still have almonds and peanut butter cups from my December trip? I might be going with a friend next weekend though
I love how every time you get your hair straightened you seem to summon this alter ego of yourself. Careful, that radiating confidence is sure to attract near-bare-chested men!
Teehee, thanks Alayna! Now, if only I could summon that man-attracting self in my daily life…
i love the straight hair look!! so pretty! and smoothies always make my day
Yay for fun days out with friends, smoothies and adorable babies!
And YAY for you getting some bananas in your life
Alas, it was but a short reunion! I don’t foresee bananas being in my life until I’m 80 years old and figure there’s nothing better to spend my money on
That smoothie sounds delicious! And with homemade vegan ice cream?? Wow.
Cute baby!!
The ice cream was amazing (I’d had it straight-up for dessert the previous night)!
I like your hair both ways, but that blow-dry is quality. x
Thank you! If only Julie would move to Canberra…
Vegan cashew ice cream? Cool! (heh heh)
Love your new hairdo, you!
Robyn’s given me the recipe, but alas! I’m terrified of the machete-process needed to get into young coconuts
Maybe one day…
I am dying to have that smoothie and your did good with the hair too.
Thanks Tammy! Alas, hair is back to its normal stupid curly state. Harrumph.
Good gosh, that’s a superb sounding smoothie… can I exchange that with a homemade mooncake as currency?
YES. Yes you may. I’ll expect you at my door within the hour.
I’m so grateful that you are in my life sweet Hannah. I think your wonderful and kind and so so brave. There are however a couple of hairdressers in this town that work well with curly hair, Shi in Kingston, Cataldo’s on Northbourne, Antics in Braddon. They cost the bomb, but dang they do the trick. Thanks for making me smile. Love you. Xxx
Oh, Anna! Thank you my darling, these words have put such a sparkle into my heart
You’ve been amazing for me this week too, so you just remember that!
Thank you for the tips, too, I’ll definitely check those places out when it comes time to brave Canberra’s hair peeps again. Talk soon? xo
Oh Hannah I wish I’d known about your website when I was editing a chocolate mag – we were always looking for chocolatey blogs to feature! Love the blog and the personal touches – will definitely be RSSing this.
Oh, Katy, that would have been fabulous! But at least we’ve found each other now
Love the hair – and those smoothies look fantastic!
Thank you!
Hot hair!
The raw vegan cashew ice cream also sounds hot
Aw, shucks! You do know how to make a girl smile!
Dude that man’s bag is slung so low, what do think is weighing it down that much? Chest hair wax? Or maybe more accurately, chest hair growth lotion?
Your dress is beautiful beautiful beautiful, it looks like something that would be fun to make by hand!
And sheesh, after hearing about both you and Sophia getting hair did all nice, I’m feeling a bit more shambly about getting it cut in my backyard while sitting on a stump I stole from the nearby forest.
To be honest, I think it’s the reams of DEEPLY IMPRESSIVE AND MEANINGFUL poetry he’s been writing nonstop for the past three weeks from his vantage point up a tree. It’s the only rational explanation.
Aw, thank you Emma! I truly love that; it makes me happy to wear it. Partly because I found it in America and wore it for the first time during my Fiddler on the Roof sojourn in Florida, which was one of the best few days of my life
Oh dear golly. Don’t feel shambly! Your haircut experience sounds utterly wonderful, like something out of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Anne of Green Gables combined
Haha my friend knows him and mentioned it after seeing this post!
Oh my heavens!! Hahaha! Oh, I hope we haven’t been too mean!
That smoothie does sound DIVINE, and what wonderful serendipity with the hairdresser. Yay for a great weekend shared between great people!
One person was missing.
Too, too true.
So while I got my straight hair curled, you got your curly hair straightened…oh the irony. lol. Love it, though!!! xD
p.s. Isn’t it getting your hair DONE? I’m going to have to google this now…
The grass is always greener
P.S. Don’t worry, my dear, that’s just a joke! In my mind, “getting may hair did” is how American Southern folk speak, but I’m probably making that up
Rest assured that, for a grammar nerd like myself, such errors are only ever intentional!
Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend (by the way what is UP with the freezingness of the weather here in Aus??!! I can’t even type! Considering a permanent move to Vietnam lol).
Loving the smoothie.
Loving the baby.
Especially loving the hair.
Which reminds me, I am also going to get my hair done today after months of rattiness. This should be good if the hairdressers don’t banish me from their salon first lol.
Bee Tee Dubs – I have two bars of chocolately goodness for you. Only two, I’m afraid since I cleverly overpacked and had only enough space between all my clothes I didn’t wear. Evs is staring at them longingly, so need an addy from you before they mysteriously disappear
SQUISH! You, my darling, make my world sparkle with your beautiful comments of wonderment and your incredible generosity. DOUBLESQUISH!
Loved this post again lovely Hann! We ALL miss you!! Xx
xoxoxo times a million!
Giiiiirl, your hair looks FANTASTIC. Hair done, nails done, everything did. You fancy, huh.
And I am not lying when I say that is the most beautiful baby I’ve ever seen.
Ugh. I finally researched the calories in bubble tea today. Better get my smoothie back on.
Aw, thank you lady! You make me smile on the inside AND the outside
And calories, schmalories! I ate half that pant of peanut butter slice in one night
You’re in Taiwan, live it up! Stupidly healthy smoothies can wait for your return to the U S of A
What a brilliant weekend! That smoothie looks AMAZING.
I get my curly hair cut by James at Franco’s which is under Bailey’s Corner in the city and also out at Brindabella Park. He is great.
Ahhhhh! This was such an incredibly cruel comment!
I thought you said you got your hair cut by James Franco.
(More seriously, thank you for the tip!!)
If only! Just imagine, James Franco the hairdresser. My James is not quite as good looking (don’t tell him I said that) but I’m sure is a better hairdresser. Plus they have massage chairs at the basins, that scores extra points from me.
MASSAGE CHAIRS!
I’m in.
Love Robyn! She’s become a great friend through the blogging world. Your hair looks amazing!!
Thank you!! And yes, Rob is wonderful
I just want to eat that baby right up. And that smoothie.
And your hair?! Beautiful! Don’t you wish we could get our hair done every day? Sigh.
Thank you Shannon!
And I really, really do. Fie on my non-superstar lifestyle!
