Words of advice for anyone else currently wandering around in sticky, energy-sapping heat:
1. If you get into your car, put your seatbelt on, press your foot down on the accelerator, try to turn the wheel, and find that nothing happens… don’t freak out.
There’s a chance that, when you got into the car, you put the car keys back into your handbag and are currently trying to drive a car that doesn’t even have its engine running.
2. If you get into your apartment building, walk up several flights of stairs, and then spend five minutes struggling to turn the key before stamping your foot in frustration because the lock is broken… don’t freak out.
There’s a chance that, in your tiredness, you forgot to go up all the flights of stairs and are currently trying to break into the apartment one floor below your own.
3. If you wake up in the morning fighting the urge to scream because you’d give anything, anything, anything to feel as free and best-version-of-yourself as you do when you’re travelling… don’t freak out.
Remember that you have wonderful friends in Canberra, in Australia, and across the world, that you’re actually the one who owes emails to many of these lovely friends (apologies to everyone I owe emails to!), and then get off your mopey horse and have fun making different versions of Green Smoothies.
The Colour Purple: Frozen banana, frozen Antioxidant (Auntie Who?) Berry Mix (blackcurrants, blueberries, and bilberries [whatever the monkey the latter are]), soymilk, spinach, cinnamon, ice, and a touch of agave.
Served with one of my New Favourite Things, a Glass Dharma straw I won via the blog of the gorgeous Rob of Girl On Raw.
Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble: Frozen banana, frozen raspberries, spinach, vegan vanilla protein powder, ice, and soymilk.
Come on, you know you love drinks that look like they’re breathing on their own.
One Short Day In the Emerald City: Frozen banana, frozen white nectarines, water, spinach, ice, and vegan vanilla protein powder. Such a pretty colour, and one of the tastiest smoothies so far.
Terrible Photo But Truly Perhaps The Best Smoothie Yet: Lots of frozen banana, frozen blueberries, spinach, vanilla extract, soy milk, agave, sunflower seed butter, and ice. I very much loved this one. Who knew bananas were so beneficial to smoothies, despite tasting boring on their own?
Last but not least, for those of you who don’t like putting spinach in your smoothies…
The Old Spice: My incredibly talented friend Corey mixed this cocktail up for me on New Year’s Eve. In my typical let’s-make-things-complicated fashion, I told him that I don’t like sweet cocktails, don’t like strong alcohol flavours, do like spice, do like mint, do don’t do don’t… He listened to me before whipping up a cocktail creation according to my preferences. From memory, there was rum, lime, mint, ginger ale, sugar syrup, and spices involved.
It was delicious.
And yes, skeptical friends of mine. This teetotaller totally teetered.
(Ask the BFF if you don’t believe me. Though I maintain I was by far the less tipsy during that New Year’s phone call.)
