Alpha And Omega! NewTree Piment and Thym

A week or so ago I reviewed NewTree’s Pleasure chocolate, which I designated Anzac biscuit-esque in flavour. At the end of that post, I hinted that I’d also bought and enjoyed a few other flavours in NewTree’s Alpha range. Sure, I could have stretched out these other flavours into two separate posts, but I’d hate for you lovely readers to think of me as withholding. Truly, I’m all about the generosity.

NewTree Piment and Thym:
Chilli and  Thyme Dark Chocolate

NewTree Alpha Piment Thym

Christmas colours, if not Christmas flavours. Which is all to the good, seeing as it's nowhere near Christmas.

A primary reason for my compressing these chocolates into one review (apart from my afore-mentioned kind spirit and the fact that I have a squillion already-eaten chocolates to review and many more yet to be eaten/reviewed) is that there’s not a lot to say about the chocolate itself. For the most part, the chocolatey part of the chocolate is merely (say it with me!) chocolate: sweet, simple, pleasant, a binding agent, there.

As with the Noir Biscuit, the first taste I had of NewTree’s chilli chocolate offered little but crunchiness from the roasted flax seeds and crispy rice inclusions. Repeat after me, readers: Crunchy Is Not A Flavour.

NewTree Alpha Piment Chocolate

It's the return of the exquisite-yet-creepy leafy veiny imprints!

Luckily for NewTree, after chewing my way through the rice and flax crispiness I did start to experience a chilli burn at the back of the throat. A few more squares in, and the sweetness of the chocolate combined with the slight nuttiness of the flax seeds and the growing heat of chilli started to move my thoughts in appreciative directions.

Soon after that, the advertised omega 3s in the chocolate did as they’re meant to do and bumped my IQ up a few notches, thus leading me to create this superb little ditty for your pleasure:

Sweet Plus Heat Is Good To Eat!

Moving on…

NewTree Alpha Thyme

Showcasing the plethora of rice crisps and flax seeds in the chocolate, if not quite all the thyme.

Once I slipped the Thyme chocolate out of its foil and cardboard packaging, I noticed two things. First, that it seemed to be slightly lighter in colour than the Piment and Pleasure bars, and second, that the aroma of thyme was incredibly strong.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love thyme. Big fan, but I’ve only ever had it in savoury dishes. As a result, the strength of the thyme made me hesitate for a moment, but then I realised that, somewhere deep inside, I knew this was going to work.

And dear heavens, did it work! I loved, love, this. The thyme was just as strong in taste as it was in aroma, and I found the earthy, dusky, herbal-y flavour to be a perfect match for the sweetness of the chocolate. It somehow played into the woodsy notes that I love to find in chocolate, and my tasting notes speak of my excitement over this flavour combination as I started imagining thyme-infused soufflés, pannacottas, cakes…

NewTree Alpha PimentSo, the final say about these three chocolates? Pleasure/Biscuit = nice enough, Piment/Chilli = getting better, Thym/Thyme = jackpot.

Plus, all those omega 3s? I’m practically a fish right now. A really intelligent fish.

I’m surprised you don’t have gills!

Hope I’m not naughtily foreshadowing something that you’re planning to post later…. but did you try any of their other flavours? I’d love to try their cassis one. My inner Ribena-lovin’ kid is obsessed with anything blackcurrent. And their cherry one…cherry chocolate can be so hit and miss… when it’s good it’s FABULOUS. But so often it’s just really underwhelming 🙁

I did, of course, mean blackcurrAnt.

I tried to just let it go – no Lizzi, don’t correct it, it’s okay, you’re allowed to make a typo – BUT NO! NOOOooo. It was just staring at me. Right in the eye. Being all….incorrect. And I simply could not handle it.

    Deeeeeep breaths.

Where’s New Tree from? Is this part of your European suitcase worth of goodies?

Oh yum, another post that’s making me want chocolate. (Well, that and the fact that it’s nearly that time of the month for me.)

L-Izzle: If it weren’t for the fact that I do not like the water (except to drink), I’d be very upset at not having gills. Also, I love that while we’re similar in many snack-tastes, we do have slightly different chocolate focuses. Blackcurrant and cherry would never pique my interest unless nothing else was available – although I do have fond grandmother-with-blackcurrant-cordial memories! I do like Green and Black’s sour cherry chocolate though.

Simply Life: There are definitely some innovative ideas in the chocolate world!

She-FIT: I hope you do – the thyme one is very much worth it!

Camille: I thought you might like the sound of that 🙂 Still no fridge? It better be the epitome of fridge-awesomeness when it arrives!

NewTree: Yep, I bought these in Belgium and Amsterdam, but I’m pretty sure they were available in France too, and quite a few flavours (not all though) are sold in the US too. Someone needs to cough *Australia* in the company’s direction!

Sadako: That’s definitely one benefit to the monthly annoyingness – the excuse to eat lots of chocolate to soothe oneself! 😉

Lorraine: I’d definitely be more certain about doing a PhD next year if my uni offered me this chocolate on a regular basis 😀
