So glad you found better gelato! And glad to hear that the real David isn’t a let-down. And that you’re having so much fun in Florence so far! 🙂

Hannah, I’m just picking up your blog again, right as you get to Italia. Good for you going right to the gelato.

That picture of you in front of Saint Coeur is completely fantastic. It should grace the back, or even the front, cover of your first book.

Whisperinggums: Not really; I didn’t post a photo of his behind or anything 😛

Kath: If only the chocolate itself had been!

Fiona: As long as those things don’t actually appear together, I think we’re okay.

Lorraine: Teehee, you won’t let that go! 😛 Sadly, there won’t be any “Hannah 4 Ronaldo 4eva” posts coming up. If there was interest, it was all on his side! I’ve had several pleasant days with pleasant boys in these 3-4 months (more than I can say for 22 years in Canberra…), so I’m very sure I’m not feelin’ it for this one!

Camille: It’s good to know that the gelato hype isn’t unjustified! Florence could never take Paris’ place in my heart, though.

David: So lovely to hear from you! And re: straight to gelato, would you expect any less of me? 😛 I’m having trouble finding torrone, though – All I’ve come across is nougat that looks like what we have in Aus. And thank you – your last comment has made my night. Should I call the book “Adventures with Domehead”, do you think?

If you are still in Florence, you must try the gelato from Vivoli. I lived and studied in Florence and it was my favourite gelati place – hands down.

It is located in a back street off Santa Croce – 7 Via Isole delle Stinche, just south of the crossroad with Via Ghibellina; tel: (+39) 55 292 334.

They used to do a chocolate orange that was to die for. Flavours change daily, so the choc orange will not necessarily be there when you visit.

Hopefully it is still going strong!

Also, off Santa Croce was a great, as we called it “secret bakery” – they bake in the middle of the night and will slyly sell you fresh pastries. We would visit after a night out of boozing. Unfortunately, due to this I don’t have an address for you, but if you wander around near Vivoli at about 2-3am you will smell the baking – let your nose guide you!!!

Oh and while I am reminiscing – go to Il Pizzaiuolo, Via de’ Macci 113r (at the corner of Via Pietrapiana, Near Santa Croce) for pizza. They did a Bismarck (with ham and a cracked egg on top) that was to die for.

Emily: Thank you so much for the recommendations! The female worker at my hostel also suggested Vivoli, so I’ll have to get there soon 🙂 Actually, I was in the Santa Croce area just yesterday, so it’s a shame I didn’t have your Bismarck and gelato ideas then… ah well, I’m now basing myself in Florence longer than I was originally, so chances are good for a visit!

Tammy: I wish I could share! And now you’ve reminded me I really need to stop eating torrone and start writing a new post…

Helen: I was pleasantly surprised by the pear! And unlike Festival del Gelato, this place let me sample flavours, so I knew I liked the pear better than the kiwi or banana (which were also good, though!)

I wonder if that’s the gelateria that was my favorite! It too was right down the road from David. Oh, and David’s butt=woo, someone turn on the fan, it is getting hot in here! I picked up a few butt-portrait-postcards in the gift shop and brought them home for fellow man-buns-loving friends.

I’m still giggly and childish when I see that statue of David. And I still have a giggle saying p3n1s when I see it 😛

Amber: I’m sure it’s the same one! Woot! We’re gelato-twins – can we make a secret handshake? David’s butt was rather nice, but I must say it was all about the arms and hands for me. I’m a sucker for nice hands 😀

Shellie: He really is splendiferous, isn’t he? I really wasn’t expecting to be so dazzled. And you’ve made me giggle with your p3n1s. (Oops, I don’t mean *your* p3n1s…)

I so agree with you about seeing David in person – I wasn’t expecting to be wowed, but ohmygod I was! Although I do think Michelangelo could have been more…. generous… when sculpting a certain part. 😉

Pear gelato? That’s definitely a flavour I haven’t tried. Sounds like it was fantastic though.

  36. Hannah

Agnes: You mean his ankles? I agree 😛 (Actually, it’s quite interesting how… subtle… that part of the male anatomy is in all ye olden day paintings! I also love seeing the realness of women’s bodies in Renaissance art. But I feel I’m a little off topic. Where were we? Pear gelato. Yes, goooooood. 🙂

    Hannah,
I found your blog about a month back, and have been reading your archives on your travels this past spring. It’s funny that we were in Florence at the same time, but we had the exact same gelato (pear and pistachio) at the exact same place! How strange! 🙂

  39. Hannah

Jess: Wow, thank you! I feel so honoured that you’ve enjoyed reading the archives 🙂 What a shame that we didn’t know we were both in Florence – we could’ve had gelato-fun-times-galore together, especially seeing as we both have perfect taste 😉
